No to the Coup D’etat against the Constitutional legitimacy in Mauritania!!
The Mauritanian Human Rights Watch is following with chock and grief the news of the coup d’etat
that took place in Mauritania on August 6, 2008, and the arrest of the democratically elected
president of our country. Driven by their selfish ambitions, some of our country’s military
leaders ignored the will of their people and the interests of the country and its institutions.
By their coup d’etat against the legitimate leadership they are oppressing their people and
opening the doors anew for violence and chaos in our country.

No democracy while refugees are still abroad.
Our country opened, seventeen years ago, the darkest pages of its
history. At that time, public authority was used to organize massive and
bloody deportations within the ethnic-African populations. At the same time,
a racist and murderous cleansing took place within the military
institution. The magnitude of these facts is such that their minimization
or denial could compromise the existence of our country and the unity of our
people.
